PREACHER'S PEN
Jeff Spencer
I was reading in 1 Peter 4 on suffering and found verse 1 a challenge:"He who has suffered is done with sin.”
How is this so?
Perhaps it is because when we go through suffering, life is no longer able to gratify us through indulgence in its distractions. When circumstances rob us of fulfillment we are driven to search for it elsewhere.
This was the experience of whoever wrote Ps 73. In verse 25 and 26 he asks God, "Who do I have other than you in heaven? And there isn't anything, anywhere on earth that I need or want in life other than you!"
If you are struggling under some overwhelming trial at the moment, it just may be that this is exactly the place of enduring fullfillment that God is seeking to bring you to through what you are suffering... It reminds me of a poem that has always arrested me:
When God wants to drill a man,
And thrill a man,
And skill a man
When God wants to mold a man
To play the noblest part;
When He yearns with all His heart
To create so great and bold a man
That all the world shall be amazed,
Watch His methods, watch His ways!
How He ruthlessly perfects
Whom He royally elects!
How He hammers him and hurts him,
And with mighty blows convert him;
Into trial shapes of clay which
Only God understands;
While his tortured heart is crying
And he lifts beseeching hands!
How He bends but never breaks
When his good He undertakes;
How He uses whom He chooses,
And which every purpose fuses him;
By every act induces him
To try His splendor out-
God knows what He’s about.

PREACHER'S PEN
As we press into our study of John's first epistle he tells us that the foundation of his message is that God is Light and that in Him there is no darkness at all.
It seems obvious that the pure righteousness of God's holy character has some very powerful implications for us, if we want to live in fellowship with Him. The result is an unavoidable conflict between the sin that inevitably rises up within us to challenge the life that is birthed within us as the children of God in Christ.
If we are to enjoy a deep abiding sense of assurance of our salvation in Christ, if we are to maintain integrity in our profession, and if we are to fully be the expression of God's love to a world that is lost and fallen, then the reign of sin in our hearts must be broken and banished.
This is what it means to walk in the light. John's aim is to help us find that plane of living. Let's be open to hiw God wants to do that in each of us.

PREACHER'S PEN - TRUE WORTH
MURRAY LYDEAMORE
Occasionally Leila and I watch Antiques Roadshow on TV – and no, it is not an old age reality show!!
Owners of a wide range of very old, and often well worn, items bring them to be examined and valued by experts. We are astounded with the valuation placed upon these once treasured but now , in many cases, very second hand goods.
Works of art by world renowned painters of a former era, that once were acclaimed as they hung in galleries, are presented faded and often damaged. To the onlookers there is nothing about the painting that captures their attention, but, under the gaze of the expert its history is disclosed and value declared. The expert knows that, in the hands of the right person, with careful attention this painting could be restored to its former glory.
As we, over recent Sundays have viewed our true worth , we were reminded from Scripture that Adam and Eve were the pinnacle of God’s creative genius. “So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them..” Gen 1:27
Our own experience tells us that that original, perfect creation has been marred and flawed. Despite self effort, and New Year resolutions, the damage on lives lived independently of God is so evident. We needed someone to take us from that damaged state and restore us to our original design and purpose. “ A new creation…” 2 Cor5:17 is how the Bible describes it.
A loving God and His Son Jesus are the creative geniuses with all who commit themselves to His skilled hands. Paul describes true followers of Jesus in this way- “For we are God’s masterpiece..” Ephesians 2:10

PREACHER'S PEN
WITH ANDREW KELLY
The ultimate test of our faith
We can be prone to measure our commitment to the Lord in a number of ways that are not necessarily true expressions of our faith. It is possible to gain great knowledge of God’s word without really knowing Him. We can spend our lives doing good works without ever truly serving God. We could give all our possessions to the poor without ever actually giving our lives to our Lord.
The Apostle John makes it clear that the ultimate test of our faith is not our knowledge, our works, or our generosity. The ultimate evidence of our faith is love from obedience. God’s unchanging, sacrificial, life giving love revealed in Jesus Christ, displayed in the lives of his redeemed people.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. [1 John 4:7-11]

The Essentials of the Gospel
Jeff Spencer
1. God has revealed Himself first in creation, and also in the gospel.
[Romans 1:16-20]
2. Because all mankind rejected their Creator, and replaced Him with creation instead, God gave man up to his deluding sinful choices.
[Romans 1:21-32; 3:9-10,23]
3. Man is condemned for rejecting the truth, that God intends to lead him repentance.
[Romans 1:18; 2:4-6; 6:23]
4. In love Christ died for us substitutionally, bearing our judgment to make us right with God
[Romans 3:21-26; 5:8-9; 8:1, 33-34]
5. Salvation and justification is not by works but by faith in Jesus Christ.
[Romans 3:20-28; 4:3-5, 23-25; 5:1]
6. Eternal life is through our union with Christ and our life in Him, in the same way death and sin came through our natural life in Adam.
[Romans 5:10, 12, 15-21]
7. Sin’s power and the condemnation of the law are broken through our sharing in Christ’s death
[Romans 6:3; 7:4, 6]
8. In Christ we are also raised to new life with the power to live right.
[Romans 6:4-6, 8, 22; 8:2-4]
9. This salvation is promised to anyone who in realisation of the bankruptcy of their own works, calls out in believing faith to the Lord Jesus as Lord.
[Romans 9:30-33; 10:9-13; 12:1-2]
